The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test designed to measure the English proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and institutions worldwide for admissions and academic purposes.
TOEFL Test Structure
The TOEFL iBT test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, designed to assess a test-taker's English proficiency in an academic setting. The Reading section, lasting 35 minutes, includes around 20 questions based on passages from academic texts, testing comprehension and critical thinking. The Listening section, 36 minutes long, contains 28 questions based on conversations and lectures, evaluating the ability to understand spoken English. The Speaking section, which lasts 16 minutes, consists of four tasks, including independent and integrated responses, assessing pronunciation, fluency, and coherence. Finally, the Writing section, completed in 29 minutes, requires test-takers to complete two tasks: an integrated writing task, where they summarize information from a reading passage and lecture, and an independent essay, where they express and support an opinion. The test is scored on a scale of 0-120, with each section contributing 0-30 points. The total duration is approximately 2 hours, making it one of the shortest versions of TOEFL compared to previous formats.
